Oil company PNC Energy is facing new federal scrutiny after an oil spill off the coast of Delaware, officials said Tuesday.
The spill, which was first reported Friday, was the first offshore spill in the continental U.A.T. since April 2010 when the company discovered a ruptured oil pipe in the Gulf of Mexico.PNC, which is based in Wilmington, Delaware, says the pipe ruptured after a heavy oil spill in a nearby shipping lane.
Pending a formal review by the Environmental Protection Agency, PNC is asking the agency to review the spill, the company said in a statement.
It also said it plans to conduct a thorough investigation to determine if any other companies in the region have experienced similar problems.
Pendency has been testing oil samples for contaminants since the spill.
It said the test results were inconclusive and that a “significant number” of samples were not from the spill but from a different spill.
The EPA is reviewing the spill and is expected to issue a final report in the next few weeks.
