Dallas, TX (CNN) It’s time to take the next step: Getting rid of your COH-19 medications.
In the coming days, the Department of Veterans Affairs will begin issuing new prescription drug orders to help patients get the COVID medications they need.
For the first time in history, patients can receive COVID medication orders on their own in Texas, a veteran’s agency said Thursday.
Agency spokesman Lt.
Col. John Sargent said the orders will help those veterans and their families who need to get treatment.
“We’ve had a tremendous outpouring of support from our communities and the people of Texas,” Sargant said.
“I think this is a good thing for the veterans community because it will help the veterans that have access to this.
There’s a lot of people that have been treated, and this will give them that opportunity.”
A veteran with COVID may have one COVID drug prescription and no other prescription.
If the veteran needs an extra drug, they may need to pay more than $100 per prescription, Sargart said.
The new COHES orders will take effect on Saturday, May 25, the VA said in a news release.
The VA says that it can be helpful for veterans who have been hospitalized, or whose health is declining due to COVID to get an extra prescription.
If the veteran has more than one prescription for COHED medications, they can choose to get the additional medication through their local VA pharmacy.
The agency says it will also make referrals to pharmacy technicians for additional prescriptions if necessary.
Veterans will also be able to access other benefits under the COHEST Act.
They will have access, for example, to VA housing assistance, to medical and dental care, and to the opportunity to participate in the VA health care plan.
